This portrait of Mary of Lorraine by Corneille de Lyon was probably made in 1536, when James V of Scotland travelled through France. At that time, Mary wasn’t of much interest to him, as he intended to marry the french king’s daughter, Madeleine, which he did on January first, 1537.
But that’s only the future. Today 497 years ago, in 1515, Antoinette de Bourbon, the duke Claude of Guise’s wife, had her first child, a baby girl, in the castle of Bar in Lorraine. Her chosen name was the virgin’s name, Marie.
